Hank Moody (David Duchovny) is a writer down on his luck. Suffering from writers block, sex addiction, and drugs and alcohol, the exit of his girlfriend Karen (Natascha McElhone) is the tip of the iceberg. Suffering now from a broken heart, he struggles to prove to everyone that he can keep his life together.

Hank’s most recent novel, God Hates Us All, has just been made into an awful movie, and Hank is still recovering emotionally from the pitfalls of that blunder. To make matters worse, his ex-girlfriend Karen has a new man in her life, Bill (Damian Young), whom she intends to marry. Hank meets a young girl, Mia (Madeline Zima), and the two have sex. Unbeknownst to him, Mia is Bill’s teenage daughter. Strategically, Mia uses the fact that she’s underage to get as much out of Hank as she can, creating drama for him whenever he visits her family and forcing him to write school assignments for her that she shares in class. This event sets the ball in motion as Hank continues to battle with Mia’s extortion, his own writer's block, and his love for his long-lost Karen.
